Good Reads: Cry, the Beloved Country

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

“Therefore I shall devote myself, my time, my energy, my talents, to the service of South Africa. I shall no longer ask myself if this or that is expedient, but only if it is right. I shall do this, not because I am noble or unselfish, but because life slips away, and because I need for the rest of my journey a star that will not play false to me, a compass that will not lie. I shall do this, not because I am a negrophile and a hater of my own, but because I cannot find it in me to do anything else. I am lost when I balance this against that, I am lost when I ask if this is safe, I am lost when I ask if men, white men or black men, Englishmen or Afrikaners, Gentiles or Jews, will approve. Therefore I shall try to do what is right, and to speak what is true. I do this not because I am courageous and honest, but because it is the only way to end the conflict of my deepest soul. I do it because I am no longer able to aspire to the highest with one part of myself, and to deny it with another. I do not wish to live like that, I would rather die than live like that.”

LETTERS TO GUNS by Brendan Constantine

“With the epistolary speed of a good kiss, Brendan Constantine mixes the importune worlds of violence and passion with great immediacy. As van Gogh suggested, he “exaggerates the essential,” and thus builds a surreal world that keeps reminding us where we have just arrived: the over-ripened America we happily devour in his poems.”

–Mark Irwin

Good Reads: A People’s History of the United States

A PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES by Howard Zinn

This is the fascinating and disturbing story of America from the perspective of those without power: Native Americans, women, African Americans, minorities, and the working poor. Eye-opening and heart-breaking.

DON’T SMELL THE FLOSS amazing short stories by Matty Byloos

“I was kittied to death by these stories. Matty Byloos’s fiction doesn’t go down smooth, and that’s a good thing: his sentences are hot blurts that bust rudely and hilariously into the reader’s consciousness. The revelations of Byloos’s book are many: I’m very glad I now know about ‘Momma’s little ham-glazing sessions’; I’ll never forget that ‘my couch is like a soap opera…’”

–Andrew Leland, The Believer

DON’T SMELL THE FLOSS is available at BOOKMACHINE.

BEAUTIFUL MUTANTS is a collection of images created for an exhibit at Cal State Fullerton’s Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana, CA.
